Mark Carney, Canada’s newly elected prime minister as of three days ago, is soon meeting with the United States president Donald Trump to discuss the two countries future involvement regarding “trade and security” (Major, CBC). During Carney’s news conference on Friday, he announced this meeting taking place in Washington on Tuesday, his first major announcement to the media following the Liberals minority government win. Although the liberal leader claimed to be the best candidate to negotiate and battle through these stressful times with our neighbouring country, he says, “Tuesday's meeting doesn't necessarily mean there will be an immediate resolution to the tariff issue” (Major, CBC). Carney also stated in the conference that Canada will be becoming less reliant on the American economy and focus on building our own, so is content with the fact that these negotiations may take time.
This meeting is a step in the right direction to establish a stronger U.S. and Canadian relationship at this time, although I know that the previous relationship between the two nations will never be reestablished. Watching everything that Trump has instated as president is quite alarming and even though this meeting is just a very early negotiation, it gives me hope that the situation can change. I am curious to see how Trump will act towards our new Liberal prime minister and what kind of approach and attitude Carney will take in discussing these matters with Trump. In previous meetings with the United States president, I know his ego has been a major factor in the way he acts towards others, so seeing if Carney will play into his personality or not will be interesting. With Trump having mentioned Canada becoming the “51st state” and reinstating damaging tariffs on Canadian goods, Carney must take a stand to fight back. I am eagerly awaiting this first of many meetings and interaction between the President and Prime Minister and hope to see a strong Mark Carney stand up to Trump’s far-fetched antics.
