The night before the scheduled peace discussion between the two nations, a major drone strike has attacked Russian military bombers in the region of Siberia, displaying bold behavior from Ukraine. This recent action was devastating for Russian military forces, “striking more than 40 warplanes thousands of miles from (Ukraine’s) own territory, a security official has said” (Cole et al., the Guardian). These Russian aircrafts were said to have gone up in flames just hours ago (on June 1st) and were reported to be the vessels carrying long range missiles that are used to attack cities within Ukraine. Cole (the Guardian) explains that these drones were smuggled to the perimeter of the Russian airfields within the roofs of wooden sheds and attacked four different locations. “If the extent of the damage is confirmed, the attack would mark Ukraine’s most damaging drone strike of the war to date” (Cole et al., the Guardian) with Ukrainian Intelligence reporting a total of $7 billion worth of damage. This operation has been stated by Ukrainian officials to have been in progress for more than 18 months with designed, elaborate remote activated mechanisms to store and release the attack drones. While no casualties have been reported from the drone strike, Russia has fired back and “launched 472 drones overnight, the highest nightly total of the war so far, as well as seven missiles”, resulting in the death of at least 12 Ukrainian service members already.

This drone strike on the eve of direct negotiations is a surprising event in this three year to date war. It exemplifies Ukraine’s sophisticated operational planning and proves how far technology has developed as the attack was purely automatic and required minimal personnel. I wasn’t aware that drones alone could cause such a staggering amount of damage and was surprised to hear the value of the bombers destroyed. However, Ukraine’s attack resulted in no casualties, which I believe to be intentional as they targeted aircrafts and not humans. Russia’s retaliation efforts targeted a Ukrainian military training facility which resulted in many deaths and injuries, as well as great destruction. These events make it hard to feel optimistic about any resolution coming soon, proving that peace can be complicated to achieve.
