Flin Flon, Manitoba, is currently at the mercy of mother nature, as wildfires burn rampantly surrounding the town. Residents of the town have been evacuated as everyone, “braces for devastation as wind (is) expected to drive (the) wildfire into (the) city” (Bernhardt, CBC). While speaking to CBC News, the mayor of Flin Flon said he doesn’t, “want to sugarcoat anything … it's not looking good at all” (Bernhardt, CBC), explaining how the wildfire is bordering the town and could leave the community in ruins if winds are to shift as projected. This fire that “is 40,000 hectares in size and less than 400 metres from the edge of the city” (Bernhardt, CBC) is challenging emergency response crews as resources (such as water) are sparce due to use fighting fires elsewhere in the province. According to Bernhardt (May 30, 2025) as of Thursday, there are a total of 22 wildfires in Manitoba, actively raging. This year alone, there have already been a total of 103 fires, which compared to the 20-year annual average of 80 at this time, is much higher.
This is very frightening as these wildfires are already causing evacuations and mass destruction in the province of Manitoba, so early on in the hot weather season. Considering that this year is already setting records for the number of fires burning at this time of the year, I am scared to witness the catastrophic effect of the hotter, dryer summer months. Looking back over the last few years, wildfires have severely impacted our country in many harmful ways by destroying entire towns beyond recognition, taking countless lives, and polluting the environment further. These events have almost been normalized though in society, as the occurrence of wildfires is so common now, many people think there is nothing we can do to help prevent their destruction. However, our increasingly hotter summers are a result of climate change, which “fuels” these fires and creates such a large-scale impact when they do burn. While although these wildfires are partially out of our control, we can still fight back against climate change by reducing our green footprint and protecting our environment.
