Last night (Wednesday) was the opening game of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, against the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers. Edmonton has the home ice advantage this series and had a strong start against the team they faced in the final series last year. However, one year ago, the Oilers lost their first three games in the series, “before storming back to force Game 7, where (they) suffered a narrow 2-1 loss” (The Canadian Press, TSN). Last night was different though when they secured the win in overtime, coming back from trailing to a 4-3 win. The winning goal was scored with 31 seconds left in the first overtime by Draisaitl on a power-play and assist from McDavid. Stuart Skinner, the Edmonton goaltender who made 29 saves last night, recalled after the game, ““we showed up right from the get-go and the way that we continued to keep on going even though we were down by two (goals), that shows a lot of character from us”” (The Canadian Press, TSN). The Oilers started the game with a goal 66 seconds into the first period, the “fastest goal to start a Cup final in nearly 50 years” (The Canadian Press, TSN) but then found themselves down by two in the second. They battled back to tie the game in the third period and sent it into overtime, where they secured their win. The second game of the series takes place in Edmonton on Friday evening.

This is an exciting series for everyone in the nation since a Canadian team has not won the Stanley cup since 1993. Although we have had many chances since, this positive start to the series is always hopeful in what is to come as the games progress. The rematch from last year also adds an extra element of competitive fire between the two teams as Florida is aiming for a repeat while Edmonton wants revenge. This is an important time for national unity, which these playoffs can provide for people across the country (although there is some divide with loyalty to local teams). I am hoping Edmonton wins the cup because I am very patriotic and always celebrate Canadian successes while also not wanting to see Florida win again. There is a sort of new rivalry against Canadian and American teams now with the new President of the United States actions affecting our nation enraging many. There are high hopes that Edmonton can defeat Florida in this finals series and claim the title of Stanley Cup Champions.
