There are very few daytime drop-in facilities for the homeless population of the Downtown Vancouver area, and those that are established are struggling to accommodate all community members in need. While the majority of homeless shelters downtown provide only overnight care, the daytime drop-in center run by the Kettle Society provides resources to access during the day. These include food, showers and washrooms, laundry, and opportunities to seek further support and counselling. The shelter’s Director of Community Services is “seeing (a) growing numbers of visitors… and more people with complex needs” (Ke et al., Global News), and has emphasized the demand for these services is too great to meet, calling on further support from the community. Vancouver city council has arranged “to look into more funding and potential sites for day spaces and washrooms” (Ke et al., Global News) to help aid in this pressing concern.
This is a relevant topic for me, living in Vancouver and observing the happenings involving the people who are unhoused over town. I know that this is a serious issue and concern for our local communities and Vancouver has one of the most serious homeless crises in Canada. I was previously unaware of how important day-time facilities are for this community but now realize that this kind of support can be largely overshadowed by the need for permanent or overnight housing. Prioritizing the formation of more locations like the Kettle Society’s Drop-In Shelter is an important first step in addressing these issues and supporting those in need. Something as basic as a place to take a minute to gather yourself and practice self-hygiene, such as taking a shower, is typically taken for granted by many people. This is why further awareness of this crisis and encouraging others to donate time or money to a cause such as the Kettle Society is very important.
